Building a Growth Mindset for Success

The Growth Mindset Is Good.

But Noise Is Better.

Posted on May 18th, 2023

In the pursuit of success, most people are told to “have a growth mindset.”

That’s good advice. But here’s what I’ve learned:

A growth mindset is powerful not because it sounds positive —

but because it changes how you interpret distractions, redirections, complications…noise. It changes how you see the noise in your life.

And noise is everything.

What Is Noise?

Glad you asked. Noise is the resistance that shows up the moment you pursue something meaningful.

It sounds like:

  • “Who do you think you are?”
  • “You’ve tried before.”
  • “This is uncomfortable.”
  • “People might judge you.”
  • “This is too hard.”
  • Or. “Heh! Look! Something shiny!”

The knee-jerk reaction is to stop. Totally natural. But Goal-Getters understand something different.

Noise defines the path on every treasure map.

Growth Mindset — Upgraded

A growth mindset says your abilities can be developed.

True.

But a Goal-Getter mindset under the constant shaping of our noise goes further:

If something irritates you, scares you, or frustrates you —

it’s revealing exactly what needs to be upgraded.

Your frustration exposes a skill gap.

Your fear exposes an identity shift.

Your resistance points to your next level.

It can seem like a punishment, but Noise is no punishment. It’s instruction. Very instructional.

Challenges Aren’t Obstacles.

At least not in the traditional role. Challenges are now Coordinates.

When difficulty hits, two paths open:

  • Retreat to comfort.
  • Read the map.

Those who are motivated by pleasing methods retreat. It’s mostly what they know.

  • “I’m not paid enough for this.”
  • “God doesn’t want me to.”
  • “Let me finish this game.”
  • “I’ll do it later.”

But we, Goal-Getters, whom are motivated by pleasing result's, study the discomfort.

They ask:

  • Why did that comment bother me?
  • Why did I avoid that task?
  • Why did I procrastinate?
  • Why did I shrink in that moment?
  • What does God want me to learn?

Those reactions aren’t random. Those reactions are seeking answers…Coordinates.

They show you precisely what must change if we are to remotely come close to reaching the prize.

Failure Amplifies the Map

We’ve heard, “Failure is a stepping stone.”

Yes.

But here’s the deeper truth: Failure amplifies noise. And amplified noise makes weak spots visible. Clear as day in many cases.

That’s gold.

If no one responds to your launch — noise.

If you quit a habit after three days — noise.

If criticism rattles you — noise.

Each one is saying: Upgrade here. Not shame. Not condemnation. Simple Instruction.

Identity > Ability

A growth mindset says:

“I can’t do this… yet.”

A Goal-Getter says:

“I am becoming the type of person who does this.”

That’s the shift.

One focuses on skill. The other focuses on identity.

When you decide to wake up at 5:00 AM:

Your body resists.

Your brain argues.

The bed wins.

That resistance? Noise.

Lean in long enough, and something changes. You stop trying to wake up early. You become someone who wakes up early.

You Noise Forced the upgrade.

Resilience Is Interpretation

Comfort Zone says:

“This is painful. Stop.”

Growth Mindset says:

“This is difficult. Learn.”

Goal-Getter says:

“This is loud. Good. I’m close.”

Noise often gets loud right before breakthrough.

Criticism stings — but that sting is pointing somewhere important.

You don’t grow by protecting your ego. You grow by refining your structure.

Surround yourself with people who analyze discomfort instead of avoiding it.

  • Find mentors.
  • Find builders.
  • Find people uncomfortable on purpose.

Watch how they respond to noise.

The Real Shift

A Goal-Getter mindset says:

“My noise is revealing the path to my treasure.”

You don’t need less resistance.

You need better interpretation.

The irritation.

The fear.

The insecurity.

The procrastination.

They are not proof you’re incapable. They are proof you’ve located the treasure.

Now you have a choice: Retreat to comfort. Or follow the map.
